As ten students work at AMTEC North on the Pen Fabrication Project with instructor Jerry Becraft, the other ten students are working at the nearby Stillaguamish Senior Center as part of their 36 hour service learning component to the summer program. For three days, students will complete 3 hours of service each day and then rotate out with the other group of students in the afternoon so that all students are doing both the pen fab project and service learning on all three Fridays.
Day 1
Under the guidance of Wanda Schroeder, Stilly Center administrator, students worked with YAP Case Manager and Academic Advisor Crystal Jensen and our fantastic summer volunteer Susan Stachowiak (a retired engineer helping mentor the students) to clean up the senior center’s grounds, including weed pulling, mulch laying, tree and bush pruning, and flower bed tilling. Because their regular volunteer groundskeeper has been out for several weeks with an injury, the grounds were in poor condition. The Stilly staff and residents were extremely grateful that our students could help beautify their home once again. Up next, help with the Stilly Center’s thrift store
