Each year, United Way chapters all around the state of Washington produce a resource fair for people experiencing homelessness to connect them with social service agencies, help find them housing, and provide them with supplies they need to survive until they can be housed. As part of their 36-hour summer service learning commitment, YAP students volunteered four hours of their time to help set up Evergreen Middle School’s gym for the United Way of Snohomish County’s Project Homeless Connect event in Everett. Students set up tables and chairs, unloaded and stocked materials, laid electrical wiring, and helped vendors with other preparation tasks to be sure the gym was ready for the expected 1200 people who would come through the doors the next day. Instructor Todd Morgan taught the students how to do a daisy line that helped them unload trucks within five minutes that had Brenna Anderst, United Way’s Engagement and Volunteerism Manager and PHC event organizer, super impressed. “I can’t believe how fast everything got done with all of their hard work!” Brenna said in a follow-up email thanking us for our service.
