YAP 5 students were invited to Everett Community College’s AMTEC North campus at Weston High School in Arlington to take part in a pen fabrication project as a way to get introduced to CNC Machining procedures. This three-day project, scheduled for every other Friday, will culminate in a high quality wood ink pen that students will be able to take home as a product of their new understanding of precision machining, one of the five areas in aerospace manufacturing that they will be able to get a certificate in once they complete high school.
Day 1
On Day 1, students worked with instructor Jerry Becraft and his assistant instructors Sofie Jessup and Adam Gott to cut the wood, drill holes, and glue in the metal casing for the pen. In later sessions, students will contour the wood using the CNC Machine, and then later put the pen together with the pre-ordered metal parts. While students rotated in an out of the project on Day 1, instructor Todd Morgan worked with the students on SMART goals as a way to tie in project planning to the actual hands-on fabrication.
