The students of YAP 5 have been investing the summer into learning as much as they can about the Aerospace Industry, they have seen several different companies that design and build to the success of their products and contribution to the Industry. Now what if our students created their own Aerospace Companies, AeroBiz week allowed our students to explore their skills and knowledge to develop their own companies with very real products for the Industry. They would have one week to create a company with a product for the Industry and at the end of the week, have it be judged by several judges related to the Aerospace Industry.
Day 1
On Day 1, each students was assigned to their group to start the development of that group’s company. Four companies had to create and design the basics of their company and their product. We saw a new kind of drive in each students as they got to work. The students created their companies names and mission statements. The products were accurate and achievable as the pertained to the field of Aerospace Manufacturing.
Day 2
As the ideas came together each team had their product and some sort of design they wanted to bring to life. Each company was broken into three main roles, CEO, Marketing Crew, and Design Crew. We saw great teamwork and learning goals achieved within this week. So much still had to be done as the teams needed presentations, models, and research for their products.
Day 3
Prices for each product had to be established and backed up by research. The companies decided, based off the cost to produce, what their products would cost for the buyer. Depending on what the product was they knew who they wanted to sell this product to, private, commercial, or both.
Day 4
The end of the projects were near and the Design Crews needed their designs to be presentable so the students were taken to Everett Community College’s AMETC Facility to use a Computer Aided Design Software called SolidWorks. This “CAD” software is very sophisticated so thanks to a few student volunteers at the school, our students were able to create their designs and get ready to present them.
Final Day
The day of heart-beating fearful students presenting to the judges had come. Stakes were high and students were nervous. Each team walked into the judge’s room to present, they held their heads high and stood united as a team confident in their work. At the end of each team’s presentation there was a reception and awards ceremony. The students felt relief as each judge was beyond impressed with how much work the students had done in the week. Awards were presented and applause was astonishing as each team cheered for the other teams, family and Goodwill YAP staff were proud. Everyone was honored and in the end of all the work everyone did, AeroBiz Week for the Youth Aerospace Program was a success.
